Somaliland is part of the Somalia region on the African continent. Somaliland was a British colony until 26 June 1960. In May 1991, five families in the Somali Republic declared independence and formed Somaliland.

Currently, Somaliland is an unrecognized state. This means that no country or international organization thinks that Somaliland is a real country. Instead, they include Somaliland as a part of Somalia.

The Somaliland shilling is the official currency of Somaliland. It was introduced on 18 October 1994 at a rate of one new Somaliland shilling to 100 Somali shillings. Somaliland Shilling has not yet been approved internationally. And so, currently it does not have an official exchange rate.

Somali Shilling is used instead of Somaliland Shilling, even in areas such as Ayn, Sanaag and Sool, where the Somaliland local government claims to be their own.

ആഫ്രിക്കൻ ഭൂഖണ്ഡത്തിലെ സോമാലിയൻ റിപ്പബ്ലിക്കിന്റെ (Somalia) ഭാഗമായി സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു മേഖലയാണ് Somaliland. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സോമാലിലാന്റിന്റെ പിൻ‌ഗാമിയായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ച് 1991-ൽ സ്വതന്ത്രരായി രൂപപ്പെട്ട രാജ്യമാണെങ്കിലും മറ്റേതെങ്കിലും രാജ്യമോ അന്താരാഷ്ട്രസംഘടനകളോ Somaliland-നെ അംഗീകരിച്ചിട്ടില്ല.

Somaliland Shilling അന്താരാഷ്ട്രതലത്തില്‍ ഇതുവരെ അംഗീകരിക്കപെട്ടിട്ടില്ല. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ നിലവില്‍ ഔദ്യോഗികമായി ഒരു വിനിമയ നിരക്ക് (Exchange Rate) ഇതിനില്ല.

സോമാലിലാന്‍ഡ്‌ പ്രാദേശിക സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ അവരുടെതാണെന്ന് അവകാശപ്പെടുന്ന Ayn, Sanaag, Sool മുതലായ പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ പോലും Somaliland Shilling-ന് പകരം Somali Shilling ആണ് വിനിമയത്തിന് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.
